Rampant poverty, denial of basic human rights, and a rash of violence against peaceful protestors have led to global concern about the atrocities occurring in the region. In 1990, democratic elections led to a landslide victory by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi, who never made it into office. She remains under house arrest today by the military junta still in power.
